Jay Sean, born Kamaljit Singh Jhooti on March 26, 1981 in Harlesden, London, United Kingdom, is a British Asian Indian R&B singer, best known for his American-debut Hit single "Down".

Jay Sean is a stage name that he adapted because his family affectionately called him 'Shaan' and 'J' from his MC name (MC Nicky J). He grew up in Hounslow, which is located near London Heathrow Airport, west of London.

Sean started his hobby of rapping at the age of 11, in a hip hop duo called "Compulsive Disorder" with his cousin Pritpal Ruprai. He went to a private boys school and won himself a place at the Barts & the London, Queen Mary's school of Medicine & Dentistry in London to train as a doctor. After two years Jay Sean secured a one million pounds record deal and dropped out to pursue his Musical career.

His first taste of UK chart success was with his collaboration with Rishi Rich and Juggy D with the song, "Dance with You (Nachna Tere Naal)" which became a top twenty hit. More hits soon following such as "Stolen", "Eyes On You", "Ride It" and "Tonight" in UK. He has released two albums, Me Against Myself (2004) and My Own Way (2008). He was signed to Virgin Records and to Jayded Records.

In 2009, Sean signed to Cash Money Records for his United States releases. He has released his American-debut Hit single "Down" and is working on his debut U.S. album (third worldwide) All or Nothing. His first single from debut U.S. album, "Down", topped the Billboard Hot 100.
